Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

The first session is an opportunity for us to start to get to know each other and to give you an opportunity to see how I work, ask me any questions and decide whether you feel comfortable working with me. It is natural to feel nervous about the first counselling session, so my aim is to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

You will have the opportunity to explain why you have decided to come for counselling, what you would like to achieve from the counselling and to discuss any concerns you have about the counselling process. Once we have agreed a way forward, future sessions will then be booked at times and dates to suit you. Counselling sessions are usually on a weekly basis, however I appreciate that this is not possible for everyone, and I am happy to be flexible according to your individual requirements.

HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS?

Session typically last for one counselling hour, and are usually on a weekly basis, however I am flexible to your requirements.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

The number of sessions needed will vary according to the individual and their specific requirements. It can be anything from providing short term, brief focused crisis intervention averaging between 6-12 sessions, to long term, open-ended psychotherapy towards a journey of self-discovery. During the initial appointment we will establish how many sessions you feel you would like to have and then we can review your progress accordingly. The amount of sessions you have is completely up to you, and you can have as little or as many as you feel suitable.

WHO USUALLY COMES FOR COUNSELLING?

The simple answer to this question is – anyone and everyone. I have worked with people of all ages, backgrounds and from all walks of life. Unfortunately life involves experiencing difficulties at times, which none of us are insusceptible to. Sometimes we are able to resolve these issues on our own, but sometimes people need a bit of help in order to put things into perspective and be able to move forward in their lives.

DO YOU WORK WITH CHILDREN?

No, I only provide counselling services to adults 18+.

IS IT CONFIDENTIAL?

Confidentiality is of paramount importance and I am committed to the BACP code of Ethics regarding confidentiality. There are a couple of specific exceptions to this, but we will discuss these in more detail in our first session.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Counselling sessions are priced at £50.00 per session.

DO YOU OFFER REDUCED FEE SESSIONS?

Yes, I offer a limited number of low cost counselling places to those on a low income and students.  This can be discussed during the initial consultation call.

HOW CAN I PAY?

Payment can be made by bank transfer in advance or in cash, debit / credit card on the day.

HOW CAN I FIND THE RIGHT COUNSELLOR FOR ME?

Finding the right counsellor is primarily about working with someone with whom you can trust. My advice would be to contact 2 or 3 counsellors and speak to them on the phone, or even meet up with them to get an idea of what they are like and how they work. I am more than happy to talk with you over the phone at no cost or obligation to discuss what type of counselling I think would be suitable for you and what type of counsellor would suit you best.
